The updated report now gives you very specific categories and labels for errors and responses.

Google announced that it has made some substantial updates to the coverage report within Google Search Console. The company is rolling out significant improvements to this report so you are better informed on issues that might prevent Google from crawling and indexing your pages. Google says that this update is focused on providing more accurate state to existing issues which should help you solve them more easily.

What exactly is the coverage report?

The coverage report is found in the Google Search Console and shows the indexing state of all URLs that Google has visited or tried to visit.

So, what exactly is the update?

Google announced that it has added more fine-grained index coverage statuses to the report. You can expect Google to relabel some categories with the new, more specific categories.

The changes include:

  • Removal of the generic crawl anomaly issue type
  • All crawl errors should now be mapped to an issue with a finer resolution
  • Pages that were submitted by blocked by robots.txt and got indexed are now reported as indexed but blocked – a warning instead of an error.
  • Addition of a new issue – indexed without content – a warning
  • A soft 404 reporting is now more accurate

With these changes you can now dive deeper into issues around Google crawling and indexing your website.
