Apple’s WWDC (WorldWide Developers Conference) was held this year in June. Every year, millions of developers and fans across the globe gather for their special Event Keynote and Platforms State of the Union. This event is filled with announcements of new features and innovations that push the experience of Apple products further. This year’s WWDC was no different. Here are some of the highlights.
MacOS Big Sur
Safari gets a huge update with new features and faster performance. User privacy along with a whole set of customizable features such as a new start page with customized background image and sections like Reading List and iCloud Tabs. This will personalize user experience. It also has improved support for extensions. The Mac Catalyst apps automatically inherit the new look, while giving developers powerful new APIs and total control over the look and behaviour of their apps.
While there’s lots to say about iOS14, here are a few highlights. The App Library can now automatically organize the user’s apps into one simple easy to navigate view. It also intelligently surfaces apps that may be helpful in the moment. App Clips is designed to load a small part of the app experience to complete a specific task. Users can now pin messages in conversations. Maps now provide new cycling directions after taking into account elevation, busy streets or stairs along the route.
In the iPadOS14, scribble with Apple Pencil allows you to write any text field where it will automatically be converted into typed text. This makes replying to text and searching in safari easy. The search feature on iPad has been rebuilt. It has a new compact design that allows users to start search from anywhere, without having to leave the app that they are in.
watchOS7 is the first of its kind innovation in wearables. It automatically detects handwashing to initiate a 20 second countdown timer. If the user stops before 20 seconds, they are prompted to keep washing. It also introduces sleep tracking. It takes a holistic approach to sleep and provides valuable tools to help users get adequate amounts of sleep. Apple Watch wearers can now even share watch faces. These are customizable and personalized and can be discovered through the App Store or even from links through websites and social media channels.
Apple TV users can now access Home-kit enabled video cameras and accessories by using Siri or Control Center and receive doorbell notifications on the big screen and live feeds showing who is there. tvOS 14 expands multi-user capabilities to include Apple Arcade and other games, so everyone in the house can instantly resume their favourite games exactly where they left off.
